The History And Descendants Of Thomas Eason, Sr.
This is a history of my ancestors, the Easons, Blairs, and Blacks. I have followed them from South Carolina, across Georgia through Morgan, Oglethorpe, Henry, Coweta and into Carroll and Troup Counties, and some of the family on to Alabama, Louisiana and into Texas and Arkansas. I have gone through the births and deaths of children and adults through the census records over the years. I went to war with those that fought in the confederate war for the south that they believed in. Five brothers, John, James, William, Jefferson and Augustus joined and fought for the Confederate States of America. Of those five, only one lived to come home to Carroll County, Georgia. That one brother, William Eason, is the reason that all of our family, Henry Easons family, is here today.
In the past, our family has been one of mostly farmers. They had to work hard to take care of their families. The present day families are still hard working in a wide range of jobs. We have also continued to have men in the military. We dont know what is in store for the future generations, but one thing that I am very sure of, is that they too, will continue the family tradition of being hard-working patriotic citizens.
This family history has been a labor of love. It is to honor those that have come before us, to recognize those of us that are living today, and hopefully be an inspiration for those that follow in the future.

Indian Creek Baptist Church Family Reunions
Indian Creek Baptist Church in Bowdon, Carroll County, Georgia was organized in 1848. The land for the church cemetery was donated by Eason Stamps whose parents were Moses Witt Stamps and Sarah Ann Eason of Coweta County, Georgia whom where originally from Henry County, North Carolina. {Ref: 1850 Federal Mortality Schedule Page 57}. Our family moved to Bowdon Georgia from Coweta County Georgia in 1853. William and John Eason were the Patriarchs of the Indian Creek Baptist Church Easons. Over the years, a great many of our ancesters have been buried in the church cemetery.
For many years the Eason Family Reunions where held under the great old oak trees that grew in the front yard of the church. I remember the # 3 washtub filled with fresh squeezed lemonade that we always had every year. All the good home cooked food and having to rush to get to Grannies chicken dressing before it was all eaten. The Eason women sure knew how to cook. There were so many relatives attending the reunions and always more than enough food. We kids always had a great time playing in the church yard under the oaks. It was at one of these reunions that I asked Grannie about her parents and she told me their names. They have been included in our family history. For some reason that I am not clear about, we stopped having our reunions at Indian Creek Baptist Church.

Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church
Later, the family reunions where held at Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church, which was organized September 25, 1840. I was an adult with grown children and grandchildren when I attended these reunions. There was still the good home cooked food as always and all the relatives that I love so dearly, but the magic of childhood reunions was gone. I have a lot of family pictures that I took at these reunions and I get them out and look at them and remember the good times in those bygone days in the not too distant past. As family members passed away, and the health of those left starting to decline, and with a lot of family members not attending, the reunions ceased to exist. This was truly the end of a great and wonderful family tradition.

Remembering The Past Through My Eyes
Some of my earliest memories include Granny and Grandpa Eason. I remember Granny and mama quilting on an old wood frame hanging from the ceiling. When they finished for the day, they would roll the strings holding the frame around the ends to get it high enough so the adults would not bump their heads on the frames.
Then there is the time we went to Granny and Grandpas so mama and daddy could help with the hog killing. I was only 4 or 5 but I can still see in my minds eye, the hog hanging from the barn door frame. We stayed all night, with the adults staying up late cutting up and preparing the pork to keep it from ruining. I remember Granny making and bottling grape juice to be used at the church for the last supper. She made unleavened bread for the last supper also.
Granny kept a burlap bag with worn out shirts and dresses in a closet. When the grandkids visited, we would get out some of the clothes and play dress-up. We had a ball playing in the hayloft in the barn. There was a lot of family dinners through out the year at our grandparents home, and there was an Easter egg hunt there every year also.
I can remember Grandpa stopping by our house on Saturday during the summer and Jean and myself riding in the horse drawn wagon to Granny and Grandpas house to spend the night. When several families spent the night at the same time, the kids slept on pallets on the floor. There is so much that I could write about but it would take forever. One thing I can say and really mean is, that I had a wonderful childhood. We may not have had a lot of money, but family love was plentiful.
Then Granny and Grandpa moved back to Bowdon, not long after they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 4, 1950. Even though they moved about 45 miles from us, we still went to see them about once a month. In the summer, Jean and I where allowed to ride the Greyhound bus from LaGrange to Bowdon with a stop in Franklin. In Bowdon, we got off at the corner drugstore where Grandpa would be waiting for us. Then we would have a wagon ride over dirt roads to Grandpas house which was across the road from Aunt Lillie and Uncle Joe.
The house was on top of a hill. We would have to walk down to the bottom of the hill to get water from a spring. That water was so clear and cold coming straight out of the ground. The bucket could sure get heavy going back up the hill. There where many happy summers spent on that hill. I found arrow heads in the pasture. Helped pick tomatoes on a farm one summer and earned a little bit of money. Bought Yoo-Hoos at the country store up the road that belonged to some of Uncle Joes relatives. Lying in the swing on the front porch watching the fluffy white clouds crossing a vivid blue sky. {Did not know they were called cumulus clouds at that time}. Family dinners with watermelons and cantaloupes being enjoyed later in the afternoon. These where grown in Uncle Joes fields. Making homemade ice cream and eating too much banana ice cream and getting sick. The dusty dirt road and Grannys flower garden. Grandpas soft peppermint sticks and big red apples at Christmastime. Uncle Joe making syrup with his horse walking in a circle crushing the cane to get the juice out. Grandpa playing his fiddle and singing for us. Grannys plate of fried apple or peach pies. Helping to churn butter. That was one task that I really liked to do, and boy, was that butter good on a hot homemade biscuit. Grannys smile that could light up a room. Grandpa calling me Marthy, never Martha! Popping popcorn in a wire basket over a fire in the fireplace. Going into the cellar to get onions or potatoes for Granny. Gathering eggs. The outhouse. Pollards Mountain that sure seemed a lot higher when I was a kid. Uncle Joes chicken houses and Aunt Lillies bonnets. Hearing Grandpa preach for the last time at age 91 at East LaGrange Baptist Church in LaGrange, Georgia, shortly before his death.
These are just a few of my memories. I know that each member of this family has their own memories and they should add them to their copy of our family history. I am proud to be a member of this wonderful family and it has given me great pleasure to discover so much about our ancestors and to be able to pass it on to other family members.
